Winter Skin Woes: Taking Care Of Your Skin When The Cold Weather Hits
We all face the skin struggles that come hand-in-hand with winter weather. The cold chill in the air can lead to dry and dull skin so it's important to know a few things that you can do to help your skin keep it's glow in the colder months and be fresh-faced all year round.
Check Your labels - Ingredients Are Key
We all know to stay away from the parabens and sulfates that can be found in some beauty products. But when it comes to winter skin it's important to watch out for a few other things too.
Stay clear of any drying ingredients used in cleansers and toners. Anything synthetic and some types of alcohol will only dry your skin out quicker. Instead, reach for natural or organic products that will help your skin retain it’s natural oils for a healthy glow. We’re not talking oily skin here, we’re talking naturally soft and moisturised.
You Are What You Eat
One of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking healthy is to eat well. You really are what you eat so to get that glowing skin help your body out by only putting the good stuff in your diet.
Vitamins will really help if you need that extra boost. Of course Vitamin C is great, so be sure to have your morning orange juice! Natural fats from fish and avocados will help give your skin that little something extra.
On the other end of the spectrum, caffeine and alcohol won’t do your skin any favours, so if you want to be on top form, switch out your morning trim flat white for a green tea instead.
Don’t Forget The H2O
Just as important as a healthy diet is the need to keep yourself hydrated. You can't expect your skin to be hydrated without it so keep yourself topped up. Be sure to have your 8 glasses of water every day.
Carrying a water bottle around with you will help, and you should aim for roughly two litres a day to provide your body with the hydration it needs. Your skin will reap the rewards as an added bonus.
Moisturisers And Creams
Time to bring in the good stuff! Make sure you boost your beauty routine with heavier overnight moisturisers, serums and facial oils. They will give you a super hydrated finish in the morning and give your skin the best chance to recover from the day while you sleep. Use oils and serums under your night cream and it will take you one step beyond your day-to-day moisturiser and work all night long so that by morning your skin is restored and rejuvenated.
Making sure your skin is thoroughly cleaned from the daily grime is essential, even more so in the winter. Gentle, non-stripping cleansers, packed with nourishing ingredients are your friends here. They will be more gentle to your skin but still clean deep down.
Your lips want to remain perfectly pouty too, so try exfoliating them with gentle sugar scrubs and then use a moisturising balm to keep them soft . If you want a pampered evening in, treat yourself to a re-hydrating or illuminating face mask. You deserve it!
OK, I don't really mean cold showers, but be careful not to have your shower too hot, You might get in from a long day and be tempted to rinse your day away in a scalding hot bath, or stand in a hot shower for a little too long, but avoid temptation!
Turning the heat up will only dry your skin out more, so opt for short and warm showers instead of long, boiling soaks. Steer clear from synthetic body washes and use a moisturising natural wash so you can get an extra boost of hydration whilst you wash. Follow your bath or shower with a nourishing body oil or butter
SPF Still Matters
There might be no heat, but you stlil need to remember your SPF every day. Take care of your skin and protect it from harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen. Many foundations and moisturisers contain SPF so make your choices wisely and you might not need another product. Most mineral make ups contain natural sunscreen so you can keep your regime natural even when it comes to SPF.
It's important to look after our skin all year round. With the help of natural, organic products, a good diet and plenty of water you'll be sure to keep your glow right through to Spring!
